So, I spent pretty much the last week in Portland, OR and am in actual love, you guys. Let’s be real. My favourite thing about my trip to Portland was attending the Vida Vegan Con 2013. This was my first conference, but I am already looking forward to next year! From the fantastic speakers and engaging dialogue with other bloggers, to the ridiculous amounts of swag and amazing food thanks to all the generous sponsors, I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to attend.
Some topics that really stood out to me during the conference were how to expand one’s message to include animal rights, the virtues of agency publishing versus self-publishing, international activism, and being mindful of other forms of oppression when fighting the good animal rights fight. While I was absolutely estatic as well to also learn about food photography, recipe writing, etc, a lot of the aforementioned talks were what really hit home for me. Meeting so many great new people and participating in conversation caused me to really reflect on why I went vegan in the first place, and when I stay vegan (for the animals in both cases, in case you wondered)!
When I wasn’t inside learning about awesome shit at the beautiful Portland Art Museum, I explored the nooks and crannies of Portland! Instead of boring you to tears with each painful detail of what I did each day and ate for every meal, I’ve decided to just briefly share a list of my favourite places, and a photo gallery of some of my explorations!
I covered some seriously good culinary ground this past week. Here are a few favourites!
- Voodoo Doughnuts
Seriously awesome, healthy bowls and a very cozy atmosphere. loved the Southern Bowl.
- Sizzle Pie
Metal on the jukebox, local brews, pizza for brunch, and awesome folks.
- Dovetail Bakery
Quirky and adorable, one of my favourite stops in the NE Alberta District.
- Petunia’s Pies and Pastry!
- Back to Eden
Also a vegan bakery/cafe in NE Alberta.
- White Owl Social Club
This is where we had our Unofficial Meet-up, but I came back here with a friend for dinner. Love it.
- Laughing Planet
After eating too many vegan donuts and deliciousness, I stopped here with a new friend for a nourishing Soylent Greens bowl of kale, tempeh, and grains!
- Loving Hut
The first place I ate in Portland as it was stumbling distance from my abode. So friendly, greeted with warm soup in the rain!
Also here is a gallery of my stay in Portland! This includes pretty flowers, more food I ate, shameless selfies, etc. Other than food, my favourite places in Portland were totally the International Rose Test Gardens, Douglas Fir Lounge for live music, and Hawthorne and the Alberta District for unique local joints and shops!
So, if anyone wants to adopt me so that I can live in Portland forever, I would really appreciate that. To reciprocate, I make a pretty mean tofu scramble, and am also really good and listening to indie rock and cuddling puppies and kittens. Universal health care and all is great, but there isn’t much I wouldn’t give to spend the rest of my life eating boxes of Gay Bar donuts in the drizzly rain under pretty umbrellas on a bench staring at dew covered roses. Sounds cozy enough to me.
