Oh hi darlings! I just can’t seem to grasp a hold on the days anymore. I had started writing a THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY like a week and a half ago and before I knew it, I was busy out and about baking and doing the things I love so much that I didn’t even have time to write about them last week when I wanted to pretty badly!
Then I realized, holy damn, SLOW DOWN SARAH. So then, I did. The last couple weekends have been a lot about just me. Slowing down, sleeping more, really taking time to enjoy my work if I have to work at all, enjoying quiet, more blissful moments at home.
Whenever a season comes to an end especially, I feel equal parts burnt out, excited, but ALSO ALL REFLECTIVE AND STUFF. I’ve been trying to be extra mindful of all those feels, and just take a little more care of myself. So, I’m going to share some of my favourite ways to TREAT MUHSELF and show myself a little self love lately. Mostly they probably all involve food, let’s be real here.
Without further ado, SOME OF MY LESSONS IN SELF LOVE THIS WEEK…
- EAT SO MUCH PIE. HOLY DAMN I LOVE PIE. SO MUCH.
I have been finding many ways to eat make and eat pie lately. From tiny rustic qt pies, to eating blackberry pie in bed, to savoury pot pies, I’ve done it all the past couple of weeks. There is something very ritualistic about making pie crust- from waiting for it to chill, to rolling it out with my favourite owl print rolling pin, to the time it takes to bake and rise with a beautiful flaky crust. I will now proceed to spam you with a FUCK TON of pie pictures because apparently pie makes me swear. I also like puns about pie apparently. I think I will be participating in Vegan MoFo next month, probably (between instagram, my blog, etc), so hope to include at least my savoury pot pie recipe here!
- MAKING YOURSELF TRULY AT HOME.
I am the type of person who tends to get so busy, that I tend not to prioritize my living space as often as I would like. I admit that I usually need my parents or friends to be visiting or something to actually give my space a complete cleaning overhaul (and even then, sometimes things just get shoved into closets!) but lately, I’ve been making more of an effort to make my apartment somewhere I truly want to hang out at all the time. It’s started by giving myself a little office nook, so that I can actually get work done productively when working from home, and even sometimes want to write at my little typewriter I’ve been neglecting! I was also spoiled with flowers this week from a florist building neighbour at my kitchen, and have been realizing the importance of little things like this to keep around and appreciate, even for a moment when eating dinner at the table, or catching glimpses while cozied up drinking tea and watching Netflix.
- ENJOY YOUR VIEW INSTEAD OF BEING A NETFLIX WATCHING DRONE OR AN OBLIVIOUS DRUNK OR SOMEONE WHO EATS THEIR TAKEOUT AT A NORMAL PLACE.
Seriously. This kind of reminds me of that hilarious scene in A Serious Man where Larry’s whole life is falling apart and you have Howard from the Big Bang Theory (because I can’t remember his actual character’s name for the life of me) just rambling on about perspective and exclaiming “LOOK AT THE PARKING LOT, LARRY. LOOK AT THE PARKING LOT.”
Sometimes I forget that Edmonton is actually a pretty and decent place to live because I am too busy swooning over Fox Mulder on Netflix to actually leave my apartment during daylight hours on my days off or whatever. But occasionally I catch little glimpses. Or, the other day, my good friend and I chose to eat our takeout pho in front of legistlature, instead of at home at the dinner table, for example. And it completely changed my experience and made my night. This stuff is easy, but stuff I forget.
- HAVE BATHS.
I like to have baths, because they take time. And also because you can hear Iron and Wine better in the bathtub than when the shower is running. And also because I love LUSH products so much and we have talked about that before. And also because you can have your phone in the bath to take pictures of your owl candle holders as long as you don’t drop it. Case made.
- ONCE YOU ARE NOT BURNT OUT ANYMORE, THEN AND ONLY THEN, YOU MIGHT CHOOSE TO RECONNECT WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
Because your friends are pretty awesome, but spending time in the companionship of others, I find at least, is best when you’ve already taken time for yourself. I am the type to say yes to everything, and I burn myself out heart. Lately, for every bit of socializing I do, I take extra time to relax at home when I get there, and it seems to level things out.
Brunch hangs, beers, time with my family, all of it becomeseasier and less obligatory when I’ve hung out with myself (and Mulder and Scully) first.
I guess those are all the Self-Love Sunday things for now. I really doubt you guys have learned anything new from this except for maybe realized again HOW MUCH I LOVE FOOD AND HAVE NO SHAME ABOUT LOVING FOOD AND HOW IT’S PRETTY MUCH AT THE CORE OF EVERY FIBER OF MY WELL BEING REALLY. Anyways, take care of yourselves and have a good week. xoxo
